A coat hook may seem like an unnecessary and wasteful addition to the home but it is actually a useful tool that can be used in more ways than one. A traditional coat hook is installed into the wall (usually near the front or rear entrances) and is simply used to hold coats and/or hats. It should be installed in a stud to support the weight of any coat (especially when it will be used for heavy winter coats or multiple coats on one hook) and not block or interfere with the door opening and closing fully. A coat hook is meant to be a useful method of storing outerwear – it should not create more problems.
A hook by itself is an incredibly and useful household tool. It can be used in a variety of ways and installed in several areas of the home. A standard “coat hook” could also be installed on the interior doors to hold robes (this is especially common in bathrooms). A smaller hook or even a series of hooks can be used to hold keys. This is especially handy when installed near the main doors of a building as well. Hooks can be installed in the kitchen to hold aprons or even some common cleaning items such as mops or brooms. Hooks can be utilized to hold items such as purses or school bags (remember to take the weight of the items into account during installation – heavier objects can pull a hook out of the wall when it is not installed properly).
Coat hooks come in a variety of sizes, shapes and even colors. They can be constructed from solid brass, glass, pewter, iron, plastic, steel, etc. The designs range from simple to extremely ornate and can be coordinated to existing patterns in other hardware around the home. Remember that a coat hook should accent your overall decorating style but it should not overpower it or become a focal point on its own.
